A health and safety officer has the important role of protecting both the staff/student and workplace. The primary functions of a health and safety officer are to develop, monitor and implement the organization's health and safety policy; to ensure the organization is compliant with health and safety legislation; and to reduce or prevent hazards, dangers and accidents. This role not only ensures the health and safety of the staff/student but also of the workplace, environment and general public.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of a health and safety officer are many, and may include the following:
1. Develop and implement policies: ensure policies and procedures are in place and enforced.
2. Inspections: inspect the workplace for potential hazards, identify potential hazards, assess the risks and report potential hazards.
3. Conduct drills: conduct drills, such as fire drills, to ensure equipment is properly functioning and staff are aware of what to do in an emergency.
4. Conduct investigations: respond to and investigate accidents and emergencies.
5. Ensure compliance: ensure the organization is compliant with legislative and regulatory requirements, conduct trainings with staff to make sure they are aware of regulations and procedures and provide guidance.
6. Administrative tasks: keep records of daily activities, monitor workers compensation program and maintain reference materials.

SKILLS AND SPECIFICATIONS
1. Extensive knowledge of government and local laws and statistical analysis. 
2. Knowledge of principles and practices of occupational safety and health programme administration.
3. Ability to plan, organise, promote, and implement a comprehensive health/safety programme.
4. On a continuous basis, know and understand all aspects of the job.
5. Considerable knowledge of intermittently analyse work papers, reports and special projects.
6. Ability to identify and interpret technical and numerical information; observe and problem solve operational and technical policy and procedures.
7. Ability to solve problems, the capability of carrying equipment and the physical endurance to perform emergency responses.
8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with University officials and department coordinators.
9. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well good customer service. 
10. Shall be an effectual communicator verbally as well as through writing skills in English.
11. Knowledge of basic computer operation and Microsoft office.
12. Able to deliver effective results, meet tight deadlines and targets.
13. Ability to operate under immense pressure.
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. 

Experience:

Four years of responsible professional experience in workplace safety and employee training work, at least two years of which have involved administration of a comprehensive safety and accident prevention program, such as fire prevention, environmental health, industrial hygiene or safety. 

Education:

Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a degree or major course work in environmental health or related field is typically required, industrial engineering, safety engineering, occupational health, or a closely related field would be a plus.
