Four workers were killed and as many as 13 others were injured due to leakage of phosgene gas at the TDI unit on Wednesday night, Bharuch Superintendent of Police, Sandeep Singh told PTI.
TDI is toluene diisocyanate, a hazardous organic chemical. Products based on TDI are used in make of automobile seating, furniture foam, mattresses etc.
Prima facie, it looks the mishap took place due to mechanical failure, he said. The 13 injured were admitted to a hospital in the district, out of which two have been referred to the government hospital in Baroda. Three workers were discharged, Singh said.
A team of Forensic Science Laboratory will visit the site later in the day, he added.
Meanwhile, district Collector Sandeep Kumar Sagale said, "We have asked Director of Industrial Safety and Health to investigate the mishap. The management of GNFC has also appointed a technical committee to probe the matter."
The Bombay Stock Exchange has sought clarification from the company but it is yet to reply.
According to a report in The Indian Express, this is the second such incident at the plant.
“This is the second such incident in the same plant as earlier in January 2014, a phosgene gas leakage incident had affected 21 labourers. But no casualties were reported,” Dahej police inspector Vipul Patel has been quoted as saying in the report.
The shares of the were down 17.43 percent on the BSE after the news of gas leak.

GNFC是印度唯一一家TDI供应商，也是印度最大的化肥和化学企业。TDI总产能6.7万吨/年，老工厂1.7万吨/年，目前正常运行，新工厂TDI年产能5万吨/年，已关闭。

近日TDI市场价格出现走跌，一方面由于上周TDI价格持续大涨，因而本周市场出现一定回调盘整。另一方面，据西南地区一些海绵厂表示，面对TDI当前5万/吨左右的价格，成本压力极大，海绵厂停工观望较多，也一定程度上对TDI价格造成打压。再加上反垄断调查，TDI正处于风口浪尖，那么印度GNFC的TDI新工厂关停会对国内TDI的价格走势有什么影响呢？
